ATV Helmets

An ATV helmet is the most important ATV accessory you can own. A certified ATV helmet is designed to reduce the chance of brain injury in the event of a crash. There are some cheap ATV helmets out there but they are not worth the risk. If you plan to ride it is imperative that you purchase a high quality helmet which is certified to be safe.

ATV helmets offer protection in several ways. A full face helmet offers a shield which covers the face but still allows adequate visibility. This can protect the face and eyes from anything that is flying through the air, whether it is a rock or a bug.

Certified ATV helmets have a hard outer shell which prevents penetration on impact. This hard shell is lined with a liner which is designed to absorb shock which will reduce the amount of energy to the skull if an impact occurs. In addition to this liner, the ATV helmet also offers an additional foam liner designed for greater comfort. A chin strap helps to hold the helmet in place.

Getting a proper fit is a very important factor when purchasing an ATV helmet. The helmet should fit snugly without any play room. If the helmet is too loose there is a chance of it flying off if there is an impact. The wind can also collect under the helmet if it does not fit snugly, causing the helmet to fall over the eyes. This creates a dangerous situation because it blocks the rider’s field of vision.

Always make sure your ATV helmet is stamped Snell or DOT certified. This means the helmet manufacturer has met or exceeded the strict standards of safety which are recommended by the government. Many helmets out there have a certified sticker placed on them after they are manufactured. These helmets are usually cheaper but they are not true Snell or DOT certified helmets. Take extra care to insure the helmet certification is authentic. This is a purchase that could very well someday save your life or the life of someone you love. Helmet cost should be the least important factor when you are making your ATV helmet purchase.
