Kid Dirt Bikes
Monday, May 7th, 2007If you have a kid chances are that kid would dearly love to own a kid dirt bike. If you are thinking about purchasing a kid dirt bike there are some things you need to know. Before you allow your child to begin riding it is important to know whether the child is mature enough to safely handle himself on a bike. Dirt bike riding can be a risky sport and should only be undertaken by responsible riders.
Kid dirt bikes are no different from adult dirt bikes except they are built on a smaller scale. There are no age requirements but common sense should always prevail. If a child is under six years of age it probably would not be a good idea to get him a dirt bike. If he is between the ages of six and twelve you should probably stay with an engine that is under 70cc. Age twelve to sixteen should stay under the 90cc engine. Once a child turns sixteen you can consider an engine over 90cc if the child has proven they can ride safely.
Even though kid dirt bikes are smaller than the adult bikes there are some models that will get up to 75 mph. A crash at this speed could be deadly. There are many states that do not have helmet laws but it is never a good idea to allow a child to get on any bike without a helmet. Dirt bikes are usually not street legal so they are ridden over fairly rough terrain. Helmets and protective clothing should always be a habit your child gets into before he ever starts the engine. Dirt bike crashes are fairly common so you can expect your kid to have a few. The key is to teach your child how to safely operate the bike and how to fall. This may sound crazy but there are ways to fall that will minimize injury. It is important to make sure your child has all of this information and the knowledge to use it if he plans on dirt bike riding.
