Motor Scooters
Sunday, April 8th, 2007Motor scooters date back as far as 1937 when Cushman was building them. The Cushman Company originally started building engines. The motor scooter was actually built for the engine instead of the other way around. The early motor scooters originally sold for an average of $135. If you are lucky enough to own an original Cushman today you will find that it is quite valuable.
Cushman continued to build motor scooters for public purchase until World War II broke out. At that time the motor scooters were then produced to serve specific purpose in the war. Many of these scooters were designed so that they could be dropped from an airplane and still perform for the soldiers on the ground.
When the war came to an end Cushman began making scooters which were geared toward family fun. These motor scooters were easy to operate with their 4 hp motor and automatic clutch. Other companies started getting in on the scooter action and soon the motor scooter was a highly desired “toy”.
Each year more and more people are choosing to own a motor scooter and there are a variety of reasons for this growth in the scooter market. Gas prices are constantly on the rise and people are looking for cheap, reliable transportation. Motor scooters are not really appropriate for a long ride but they can save a lot of money just doing the day to day errands that every household has.
A lot of people just like to ride with the wind in their face. Motor scooters allow you the freedom to enjoy the outside without having to learn to operate a larger motorcycle. Motor scooters are much lighter and easier to use than the bigger motorcycles and they cost a lot less money. They also lend themselves well to someone who is small in stature.
